Special Branch
The IPCRESS FileSpecial Branch is presented most clearly not through an account of its structure or routine work, but through the narrator’s attempt to impersonate one of its officers. Claiming to be from Brighton Special Branch, he uses the unit’s name and the appearance of official authority to enlist a driver in an investigation. The episode makes the organization significant as a credible badge of police power, even when that power is being counterfeited for an immediate purpose.
The Borrowed Identity
The narrator improvises his claim when the driver questions why he wants to go back to a building. He says he is from Brighton Special Branch and produces a forged warrant card. It passes in the dim light inside the car, although he recognizes that he would not want to rely on it in daylight. The card gives his story a material prop, but its success depends on poor visibility and the driver’s willingness to believe him; the scene does not establish that the narrator actually belongs to Special Branch.
Authority Under Question
After the driver doubts that he is a policeman, the narrator insists that the case is important and asks for assistance. When asked why he has not brought one of his own constables, he says the matter is outside his area and that he is acting on special authority. The explanation makes the claimed role sound exceptional enough to account for the absence of colleagues, while also exposing a weakness in the story: the narrator must keep improvising as the driver tests its plausibility.
The narrator’s appeal is practical rather than institutional. He hopes the driver will help him return to the building, and privately estimates that the assistance may be worth eight guineas. The driver eventually accepts the possibility of a police connection, but raises his price by another twelve guineas. Special Branch’s name thus operates in the scene as leverage in a negotiation, not as proof that the requested action is officially authorized.
Narrative Function
The episode turns police credentials into a fragile performance. A forged card, a claim of special authority, and the assertion that the case is important combine to persuade the driver, but none removes the need for bargaining or scrutiny. By showing the narrator’s claim succeeding only in poor light and under pressure, the scene distinguishes the public force associated with Special Branch from the improvised means by which an intelligence operative tries to borrow that force. The evidence here supports this particular use of the organization’s name, rather than a broader account of its formal organization or duties.
